In the reconstruction and extension of roads and bridges,some existing viaducts have to be demolished. However,the conventional demolition methods do not work efficiently,which make high energy consumption and low safety performance. Moreover,the demolition should not interrupt the traffic under the viaduct. In this case,the combined use of ground supports and SPMT (self-propelled modular transporter) to rapidly lower and remove the viaducts with great vertical clearance was proposed. The technique was successfully used to the rapid demolition of the third continuous unit of a ramp bridge crossing national highway G329 on the provincial highway S73. The part was a prestressed concrete continuous box beam structure with four spans of 20 m and with great vertical clearance. During the demolition,the structure was cut into sections,lifted and lowered onto the SPMT to move away. The use of the technique accelerated the demolition,shortened the construction schedule of the reconstruction and extension project of roads and bridges,and caused no disruption to the traffic below. The engineering practice proves that the technique proposed can reduce the influence of demolition of existing viaducts on the traffic,and energy consumption and environmental pollution are also decreased.
